Rooted Residencies.
An Educational experience for aspiring coaches and guides.
So what is the rooted residency programme?
We have had the privilege of working and training with some of the best leaders, teachers, and facilitators in the nature connection and human re-wilding space. We now feel it is our time to share what we’ve learned with aspiring coaches and guides—whether that’s people wanting to teach natural movement in nature or those who want to set up their own wilderness therapy school. We have the skills and tools to support and nourish whatever it is you wish to explore.
An embedded Experience in the beautiful Lake District for a focused week of learning and study. You’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in a wide range of knowledge and skills to support you on your journey of teaching, guiding, and inspiring others.
Your Study Options
We want to equip aspiring coaches with everything they’ll need to begin a successful teaching practice with groups or individuals. Of course, everything is tailored to what you want to learn to enrich your practice. These are the things we can work on with you!
Group Work / Studies
Session Planning / Practice Design ✍️
How to create a successful session that follows a coherent path towards your desired learning outcomes for the experience you are crafting.
Group Management 👫
Working with groups can be a complex and textured environment to navigate — especially when the group is looking to you for support, advice, or guidance. Having a strong toolbox to support you in moments like this can be extremely useful… trust us.
Group Psychology 🧠
Understanding the formative moments for groups, how to ensure folks stay regulated and calm, and understanding the changes and shifts people go through in new contexts or with strangers.
Therapeutic Applications of the Outdoors 💆♀️🌳
Here we will study the various therapeutic applications of being outdoors and how we can use them to reach our desired learning outcomes or qualities of experience.
Group Regulation 🧘🏾♀️
In many scenarios, groups can become dysregulated — whether through excitement, explosive activity, or big emotional moments. Learning how to skillfully bring the group’s emotions back down to a level of homeostasis is a very valuable skill to have in your toolkit.
Guiding Groups Through Challenging Environments 🏔️
You may find yourself wanting to take groups up rivers, rocky scrambles, along coastlines, or through deep woodland settings. Knowing how to identify dangers and learning how to position your team to minimize hazards is vital in these kinds of environments.
Working With a Team 🧑🧑🧒🧒
We have an epic and committed team with roots in play, and because of this, we’ve learned a lot about how to effectively manage and work with a team — organizational skills, code words, supportive roles, you name it, we’ve worked with it.
Movement Studies
Game Creation 🧩
Game creation is the crème de la crème when it comes to creating epic sessions. We will teach you how to take a movement concept and turn it into an inclusive and scalable game for all to enjoy.
Ecological Dynamics 🌊
The natural world is an inherently changing and shifting place full of complexity. By studying ecological dynamics, we can learn to use nature’s complexity to our advantage when teaching and learning movement.
Tree Movement Training 🐒
Movement in trees and natural parkour is a big part of how we connect people to nature. We’ll teach you how to guide others to perform skills such as swinging, climbing up and down, jumping techniques, tree transitioning, body positioning, vaulting, and much more. We’ll also cover tree identification, spotting dead branches, and other safety considerations.
Aliveness Practice 🌱
Aliveness practice is training in a way that actually feels alive. Instead of going through the motions with set drills, you’re reacting to real movement, timing, and energy — like you would in a real situation. It’s about keeping practice real so your skills actually work when things get messy or unpredictable.
Rough and Tumble Games and Theory 🤼
Our main way of connecting people together is through rough and tumble play. We’ll show you a huge variety of games that you can use with your own groups to inspire deep connection. We’ll also cover the theory behind this so you can feel well-equipped for any questions that may arise while leading.
Partner Dance Games and Education 💃🏽
You’ll receive a library of dance games to bring to your groups and spaces. No dance experience? No worries. These games are highly scalable and require little to no dance experience to try or teach.
Eco-Somatics ✋🌿
A much softer approach to nature connection — slow, connected movement deeply integrated with nature. You’ll learn how to create deeply reflective and immersive activities designed to regulate and inspire your groups.
Spot Finding / Scouting and Affordance Tracking 🪵
Learning how to find places in nature that can act as a playspace for your movement sessions is crucial. Being able to spot movement and game opportunities in the environment is arguably even more important.
The Constraints-Led Approach 🔗
The constraints-led approach is about tweaking the situation — the rules, the environment, or the person’s own abilities — to help them figure out how to move effectively on their own. Instead of telling someone exactly how to do it, you set things up so they learn by exploring and discovering what works best for them.
Play Theory 📝
The world of play-based education is new but expanding rapidly. Knowing the science and knowledge to back your craft is important for being understood by a wider audience.
Experience Design Studies
Session Planning / Practice Design ✍️
How to create a successful session that follows a coherent path towards your desired learning outcomes for the experience you are crafting.
Retreat / Expedition / Workshop Logistic Design 👷🏽♂️
How to plan, organize, finance, and run your very own multi-day experience. Everything you need to know — from logistics, finance, and marketing, all the way to artistic space creation, what to include, and ceremonial design. Everything you need for your multi-day event to be a success.
Audience Experience 🌀
Designing your event around how you want your audience to feel and experience it brings a deep level of quality and attention to your offering. We’ll share real tips and knowledge to help you bring this quality to life.
Creating the Storyline 📚
Every great event has a story or narrative that binds everything you teach together. We can help you learn how to do this in a way that is grounded, poetic, and coherent. Personally, this is one of our favorite parts of event planning.
Finding Your Why ✨
Designing your event with a clear “why” gives the experience meaning and a strong root to build the event around.
Leadership / Coaching Studies
Trust and Inspire Leadership 🗽
Trust and Inspire leadership is all about leading with belief in people rather than control. Instead of micromanaging, you create an environment where people feel trusted, valued, and motivated to bring their best selves. It’s less “do what I say” and more “I believe in you — let’s make this work together.”
Responsibilities in Leadership 🤲
Group leadership is challenging and rewarding. You have to become many things to lead in a compassionate and precise way. We’ll show you the roles of a leader and tools to embody them.
Self Leadership ✋
To effectively lead others, you must first be able to lead yourself — in your direction, motivation, and values. We can offer useful tips on habit stacking, boundary setting, effective workflow tools, and visioning practices to enhance your self-leadership abilities.
Verbal Cueing 🗣️
As a coach, you’ll end up in many different situations. Knowing what to say, how to say it, and when to say it can massively help (or hinder) someone’s learning experience. We can teach you how to attune to your students and cue them effectively.
Communication Practice 🙊
Being a clear communicator is vital in this role. Learning ways to improve this ability — the art of explanation, circling, open language, non-violent communication, and authentic relating — are all amazing tools to enhance your communication skills.
Self-Regulation 😌
In moments of high stimulation or pressure, knowing how to regulate yourself so you can stay present for those who need you is an incredible skill to cultivate. We’ll discuss and practice ways to achieve this together.
